The films aren't rated R. They are often inappropriate for younger audiences, that's why they are labeled as X-rated films. X rating is a designation for mainstream films which are matureWhen the MPAA began issuing scores for movies, the X rating was designed to indicate films with adult-orientated content that weren't acceptable for younger audiences. It was probably the most restrictive rating on the MPAA scale, and anyone under the age of 17 was not allowed to see the film. However, as the a long time glided by, the X rating became increasingly beside the point. In the past, an X-rated movie would be a source of snickers among schoolchildren, but today, Hollywood has enforced strict self-regulation for movies. The Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association of America was formed in 1922 by Hollywood studios to enforce the guidelines. This association later changed its name to the Motion Picture Association of America and later to the MPAA. It was under the presidency of Jack Valenti that the trendy ratings system was created. In 1990, the MPAA changed the X rating to NC-17, which stands for "No Children Under 17". Although it has trademarked this rating, it hasn't encouraged many filmmakers to use it.
