The film's most distinctive feature is Rex McElhenney's unorthodox functionality as Mikey, a character whose dream is to become a leading man in the future. This may appear funny and heartwarming, but it is simply plain wrong. The film ends in a gut-wrenching way. Red Rocket is the latest film by director Sean Baker, who looks at the lives of low-class Americans from a new perspective. Rex is a relative unknown, but his good looks, chops, and air of mystery make him an ideal choice for this role. Though the film is low-budget, it is tremendously character-driven and believable. The premise of the film is that a washed-up porn star returns home, only a few a long time after leaving his homeland. His real life situation is similar to Mikey, but this film does not feel as "flashy. ""Red Rocket" embodies the notion of sexual liberation while embracing its darker aspects. Baker has a history of exploring this issue via his films, but this film takes a more practical method to it. Instead of the gaudy delusion worlds of new films, Red Rocket portrays a global where the underclass exists in isolation.
