This new rating class allowed filmmakers to discover new ideas that will were cut by local censorship boards. It also allowed them to liberate films that weren't explicitly pornographic. With the advent of VHS, this new system made the system of constructing films more within your means and available. When the MPAA first created the X rating, it was regarded a badge of honor for filmmakers. It was a sign that they'd created films for a discerning audience. The X rating, even though, became synonymous with pornography. In fact, many X-rated films were nominated for Oscars. However, the MPAA has since dropped the X rating and changed it with the NC-17 rating. Before the MPAA began using the X rating as a rating class, filmmakers used it to point out the extent of adult content material of their movies. In some cases, this was the case with the film Starlet! In other cases, the X rating was used as a code for hardcore pornography. In addition to the X, NC-17, and PG movie rating classes are used for more healthy and mainstream films.
