Body dissatisfactionIt's a fact of life that media is a robust motivator, and that it has the ability to shape our outlook and our behaviour. For instance, a study in 2005 found that media was a first driver of body dissatisfaction in teens. That same year, an analogous study concluded that adolescent girls with high levels of body dissatisfaction were likely to engage in dangerous weight manage behaviours. Indeed, a survey of 3,000 women aged 15 to 24 discovered that body image was a thorn in the side of approximately 70% of the women interviewed. The thorn was the media that promoted unrealistic body image ideals. In certain, the "slim-thick" body ideal, as described by researchers, was linked to higher body dissatisfaction. A study in France found that social media use was considerably linked to better body dissatisfaction among teens, with Twitter and Instagram being essentially the most in demand culprits. Furthermore, an analogous study in California discovered that teens who were uncovered to the "slim-thick" body-image on social media exhibited higher rates of body dissatisfaction compared to those that were not. Those who were exposed to Instagram were also more likely to engage in binge eating, a behavior that is a known risk factor for arising binge eating disorder. As such, a bit bit of social media literacy can go a good way. This is not to say that each one social media users are sufferers, though.
