It was believed that the god Izanagi created the island of Onogoro via symbolic ejaculation. Shinto, the basic faith of Japan, also views sex as normal and not shameful. Because of this, shunga images often feature partly-clothed subjects, and are regarded to be much more sexually provocative than fully-naked ones. Although shunga was in large part banned in the 19th century, it remains a thriving erotic art form. Shunga, or spring pictures, are widely wide-spread among people from all categories in Japan. The art was banned for much of the 20 th century, but only recently did it come back into prominence. In 2013, a international museum in Japan held its first large-scale Shunga exhibition. This exhibition is presently the largest Shunga display in the country. Traditionally, shunga portrayed normal people having sex in their own homes. During this period, most shunga depicted ordinary people having sex with people, while the latter was customarily a man. This practice became usual enough to become a kind of pop amusement.
