With the invention of printing presses came new possibilities for authors and artists to provide and distribute their work, with pornography one of the vital first fields to benefit from this revolution. In the 19th century, London's Holywell Street boasted more than fifty pornographic shops. As printing costs reduced and clients' tastes evolved, so too did pornography's recognition both in Britain and America. However, advertisement pornography was not with out its problems. Publishing of obscene cloth was illegal in Britain and the USA, premier to proceedings from offender organizations towards publishers. Anthony Comstock was a very sought after figure during this fight towards obscenity; an ardent fanatic and tireless crusader who waged battle in opposition t pornography for four many years. Comstock, though not a clergyman, had an extreme devout dedication which enabled him to use his faith as leverage in opposition t pornography. He believed obscenity to be the ugliest form of corruption. He strongly believed that legal action was the best effective way to safeguard young girls and women towards obscenity. He was an ardent supporter of anti-pornography, having spearheaded its passage by using Congress in 1873. Many consider the discovery of the printing press to be guilty for contemporary pornography, even though there's evidence to indicate this art form has existed for far longer than humans have been on Earth.
