Some are recruited from the streets of Tokyo by record agencies drawn to their looks. Others are recruited by modeling agencies. While a lot of these younger women say they are inclined to participate in AV productions, others do not. In the early days of AV in Japan, actors and actresses were often struggling actresses from the soapland. However, some actors broke through and made big appearances in AVs. Among the earliest AV stars was the actress Kate Asabuki, whose name gave the impression on both AVs and theatrical films. She later became the host of the regular Tokyo Rock TV show. In 1982, the Crystal-Eizou studio was founded. A few years later, Toru Muranishi joined the company and constructed a nearly documentary-style strategy to filming AV. The Japanese authorities passed a law making pornography legal in 2022. The new law seeks to give protection to actors who were pressured into the industry.
