It is estimated that almost 400,000 female births in India are missed annually due to gender biased sex selection. It's estimated that India's sex ratio at birth is 105 boys per 100 girls, however the percentage has been decreasing for a long time. Son preference is a kind of gender biasSon desire is a typical variety of gender bias among Indian women. It is as a result of the imbalance in the sex ratios at birth. Hindu and Sikh women prefer daughters over sons greater than their Muslim opposite numbers. This gender bias may have contributed to the increase in female infant mortality and feticide in the past. Son preference was first observed in the 1950s, when family making plans programmes were first introduced. They portrayed the ideal family as one with a girl and a boy. However, the desire to keep the dimensions of the family small led many to prefer sons over daughters. This gender bias became more apparent as the number of daughters declined.
