While self-censorship among artists in Japan is not a new issue, recent cases of self-censorship in the humanities rekindled the debate. While it's critical to protect the freedom of expression, it can also embolden extremist aspects. In Japan, most modern art museums are publicly owned, and the MAM has been the field of protests. However, despite its arguable place in the sector, the museum is privately owned and backed by the efficient Mori family, which is a pillar of the Japanese culture. There are many explanation why artists may self-censor their work. Some are symbolic, designed to advertise social cohesion and avoid insults to shared values. Others are in line with the pursuits of effective people. For example, censorship that limits free speech erodes public trust, and it also prevents people from making informed choices during elections. Another challenge with self-censorship is that it is used to attack the 'other' side of a discussion. Far-right voices often cherrypick examples to promote their cause.
