This designation was removed after the MPAA started to offer protection to movies from censorship, but was soon followed by the "XXX" rating. It was linked to pornographyIn the late 1960s and early 1970s, many mainstream films were released with an X rating. Unlike today, when the MPAA does not appreciate rankings above X, this designation became linked to pornography. Because it was linked to pornography, X-rated films were less more likely to be booked by theaters and would lose advertisements opportunities. The term "excessive pornography" was coined in the wake of the murder of Jane Longhurst.
