This became an issue with mainstream filmmakers, and a few left their films unrated to avoid such an arrangement. However, the X rating is not used for these styles of films. This rating was created in the 1960s when several pornographic films began to become professionally produced and shown in mainstream movie theaters. Filmmakers could then apply this rating to their films with out fear of it being got rid of. In addition, films with porn themes could obtain an X rating. However, as the pornographic film industry grew, this was no longer the case. Instead, it became a lucrative industry that sprang up around the X rating. It was a designation for erotic filmsHistorically, films rated X were intended to be adult-oriented, but later it was used for a broader audience. The X rating was first used in 1951 and was created by British film producers. The X symbol in the rating was a symbolic choice, perhaps because it denotes a cross. In addition, the MPAA did not give protection to X-rated films under copyright laws, so the filmmakers were capable of add much more Xs to their films.
