The film is a three-part epic directed by a key figure in the evolution of jidaigeki, Japanese cinema. When it was first released in 1959, critics proclaimed it the largest Japanese film ever made. However, this masterpiece was never re-launched and was long idea lost until a condensed print was found out in 1991. A new generation of viewers could now admire this undying masterpiece. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989 and was the 1st Japanese film to be nominated in the category. The film was also adapted from a novel by Yasushi Sato, who tragically committed suicide in 1990. This trilogy fueled a resurgence of samurai cinema in the early twenty-first century. The film was so successful that riots broke out in Japan. In fact, it became the most successful Japanese film of the silent era. Despite its debatable nature, the film is a joy to observe. The cast is dazzling and the cinematography is breathtaking.
