Her strained daylight demeanor and angry alter-ego are common of any twenty-first century woman, and this relatability makes the show top-of-the-line in the genre. Despite the dystopia of Japan, the characters are highly real, which makes the show all of the more compelling. Retsuko's struggles begin at work, where she makes an attempt to broaden herself in the office. She takes on the duty of teaching a junior coworker, Anai, how to answer the telephone for the agency. This proves challenging when Anai exhibits her excessive social awkwardness. Retsuko's response to Anai's behavior is to provide to take her phone calls in order that she can help Anai better navigate the agency. Retsuko also recognizes Anai's anger, but she downplays it as a man's way of venting his anger. This juxtaposition highlights a double-essential that exists in the show: women are anticipated to suppress their anger, and men are allowed to specific their rage on other people. Retsuko is the protagonist of the manga Aggretsuko manga series. She is an accountant, and her generic life is full of interoffice drama and overwork. She even sings death metal at the end of her lungs.
