Despite the commercial success of such myths, the Japanese woman is still a fetish symbol in Western fiction. The origins of this Western view aren't absolutely clear. The rise of recent nation-states and imperialism in the west were followed by the spread of western concepts about women's status. Charles Fourier (1772-1837) and other western thinkers drew upon the philosophies of those countries to justify the treatment of girls as below human. Western and Chinese cultures are totally alternative, and this polarity manifests in the attitudes of men and women. Western culture promotes individualism, while Confucian collectivism puts women in a passive role in society. While men can pursue women in a romantic courting, women should remain emotionally unattached. Western societies commonly have lower levels of belief in God. In Central and Eastern Europe, basic devout practices are more common. While a majority of Europeans trust in God, many Eastern Europeans reject such ideals. In addition to the religious alterations, many Eastern Europeans are open to the idea of having same-sex relationships.
