The gay and lesbian groups grew in recognition and Shinjuku Ni-chome in Tokyo became the realm's gay town. In 2006, the media started to center around fujoshi. Female manga-ka started to create works with male-male romance. In addition, novice female creators started to distribute their self-created works at the Comiket comic trade convention. By the tip of the decade, expert female manga-ka had began developing works that depict male-male romance. Anime and manga have also made sexuality more open and fascinating. Anime and manga had been instrumental in establishing the BL genre. A key role in the development of the genre was played by Keiko Takemiya, whose 1970 manga "In the Sunroom" featured the 1st male-male kiss in manga for girls. Anime and manga fan communities in Japan began discussing their own male-female couplings.
