The Edo period shunga were a popular medium for pornographic images and are much more image than Japanese pornography laws allow. Personal computers were often considered bishojo, and only a small variety of people used them. Animated erotica in Japan started to take form in the 1980s. It began with erotic memories and wood block prints, and soon branched out into diverse genres. Many of these films feature topics that western audiences would never consider. The genre has spawned some unique fetishes, together with bukkake, gokkun, and tentacle erotica. Hentai porn has been common for many years, and has drawn young and old audiences alike.
