The film, a masterpiece of petit bourgeois cinema, is a triumph of stylistic splendor and social irony. It is possibly the most effective example of this genre in modern Japanese cinema. The film is a three-part epic directed by a key figure in the evolution of jidaigeki, Japanese cinema. When it was first released in 1959, critics proclaimed it the greatest Japanese film ever made. However, this masterpiece was never re-released and was long thought lost until a condensed print was discovered in 1991. A new era of audience could now appreciate this undying masterpiece. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989 and was the first Japanese film to be nominated in the category. The film was also tailored from a singular by Yasushi Sato, who tragically committed suicide in 1990. This trilogy fueled a resurgence of samurai cinema in the early twenty-first century. The film was so a success that riots broke out in Japan. In fact, it became the most a success Japanese film of the silent era.
