It is simple to judge Mikey as a morally corrupt personality, but his successes become our victories. Red Rocket's central characters are interesting enough to make the film interesting, but the movie is overlong and could were edited tighter. Still, the film aspects strong performances from Bree Elrod as Lexi, and Suzanna Son as Strawberry. The film also possesses a keen observant of American culture, and it makes for a compelling, enjoyable, and engrossing film. The film's most distinctive feature is Rex McElhenney's unorthodox performance as Mikey, a character whose dream is to become a leading man one day. This might sound funny and heartwarming, but it is just plain wrong. The film ends in a gut-wrenching way. Red Rocket is the most recent film by director Sean Baker, who looks at the lives of low-class Americans from a new angle. Rex is a relative unknown, but his beauty, chops, and air of secrecy make him an ideal choice for this role. Though the film is competitively priced, it is incredibly personality-driven and plausible. The premise of the film is that a washed-up porn star returns home, just some many years after leaving his place of birth.
