With the invention of printing presses came new opportunities for authors and artists to supply and distribute their work, with pornography one of the first fields to benefit from this revolution. In the 19th century, London's Holywell Street boasted greater than fifty pornographic shops. As printing costs reduced and patrons' tastes developed, so too did pornography's recognition both in Britain and America. However, commercial pornography was not without its problems. Publishing of obscene fabric was unlawful in Britain and the USA, best to proceedings from criminal businesses in opposition t publishers. Anthony Comstock was a very distinguished figure during this fight in opposition t obscenity; an ardent fanatic and tireless crusader who waged battle towards pornography for four a long time. Comstock, though not a priest, had an extreme devout dedication which enabled him to use his faith as leverage against pornography. He believed obscenity to be the ugliest form of corruption. He strongly believed that legal action was the only effective way to guard young girls and women towards obscenity. He was an ardent supporter of anti-pornography, having spearheaded its passage through Congress in 1873. Many believe the invention of the printing press to be guilty for contemporary pornography, even though there's proof to indicate this art form has existed for much longer than humans were on Earth.
