It is possibly the most effective example of this genre in modern Japanese cinema. The film is a three-part epic directed by a key figure in the evolution of jidaigeki, Japanese cinema. When it was first published in 1959, critics proclaimed it the best Japanese film ever made. However, this masterpiece was never re-released and was long concept lost until a condensed print was discovered in 1991. A new era of audience could now realize this undying masterpiece. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989 and was the first Japanese film to be nominated in the class. The film was also adapted from a singular by Yasushi Sato, who tragically devoted suicide in 1990. This trilogy fueled a resurgence of samurai cinema in the early twenty-first century. The film was so a hit that riots broke out in Japan. In fact, it became the main a hit Japanese film of the silent era. Despite its arguable nature, the film is a joy to observe.
