The word shunga means "spring photographs," and the art form has been familiar among people of all courses in Japan for hundreds of years. Its popularity has been in large part suppressed, however, for the majority of the twentieth century. The first large-scale exhibition of shunga was held at a international museum in 1904, and the Eisei Bunko Museum is currently internet hosting probably the most wide shunga displays in the nation. Shunga wood-block pictures are often depicted with the figures fully clothed, but some shunga images show only partly-clothed subjects. This is because the figures depicted in these prints were often dressed in Western clothing and hairstyles. This change in apparel and hairstyles meant that shunga images were no longer able to compete with modern erotic images. The earliest known shunga photos were produced in the course of the Edo period, when Japan was more peaceful. The service provider class had quite a number time and cash to engage in leisure actions. This led to the advent of many color prints depicting elements of the Japanese way of living. One of those, Shunga (actually "spring photos"), is a subgenre of ukiyo-e prints that depict lovers having sex in a highly Japanese aesthetic. Today, shunga remains to be a source of fascination and controversy.
