The incidence of homosexuality in the trendy world varies widely, due partly to ambiguous definitions of what constitutes homosexuality, and to modifications within and across areas. Many gay men and lesbians engage in risky sexual practices that can cause STDs and physical injuries, some of which are almost unknown to the heterosexual population. Lesbians also are at risk for certain sicknesses and may become infected with HIV, so avoiding these practices is advisable. In the 21st century, there has been greater candor about homosexuality. This has led to the elimination of stereotypes about homosexuality, that have been common in the 1950s and 1960s. In addition, more individuals are openly gay and open about their sexuality, and they are now more authorized in society. Historically, the term "gay" has been used to talk to both male and feminine homosexuals, as well as to the culture and behaviour associated with them. A same terminology is used for homosexual women, known as lesbianism. A study from 1948 found that 37% of males had some sexual experience with another male, but only 4% were completely gay. During the early 20th century, there was little discussion about homosexuality in public, even though it became a established political issue in the late twentieth century. The gay rights movement began as a late offshoot of the civil rights motion in the 1960s.
