Body dissatisfactionIt's a fact of life that media is a powerful motivator, and that it has the ability to shape our outlook and our behaviour. For instance, a study in 2005 found that media was a primary driver of body dissatisfaction in teens. That same year, the same study concluded that adolescent girls with high levels of body dissatisfaction were more likely to engage in unhealthy weight handle behaviours. Indeed, a survey of 3,000 women aged 15 to 24 revealed that body image was a thorn in the side of roughly 70% of the women interviewed. The thorn was the media that promoted unrealistic body image ideals. In specific, the "slim-thick" body ideal, as described by researchers, was linked to increased body dissatisfaction. A study in France found that social media use was considerably linked to greater body dissatisfaction among teens, with Twitter and Instagram being the most outstanding culprits. Furthermore, a similar study in California discovered that teens who were uncovered to the "slim-thick" body-image on social media exhibited higher rates of body dissatisfaction compared to people that were not. Those who were uncovered to Instagram were also more more likely to engage in binge eating, a conduct that is a known risk factor for developing binge eating disorder. As such, a little bit of social media literacy can go a long way. This is not to say that every one social media users are sufferers, though.
