" Its casting of Marlon Brando and a comparatively unknown Maria Schneider worried off imitators and have become the last X-rated movie to tackle sexuality. The film is a combination of non-public, political, and spiritual themes. The film follows the lives of a middle-aged man who tries to escape bourgeois society. His young wife struggles along with her sexual urges and family ties. She makes little development in her life and finally ends up snoozing with a man with an identical name as her old flame. Although these themes may seem irrelevant to the genre, they are applicable to the film. The film was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, a man who was 31 years old at the time.
