Whether it's a game this is designed to make contestants win or a challenge that calls for a large number of skill, there is something to entertain everybody. Game shows have been typical because the early days of television, and the Japanese are no exception. In the USA, you may call to mind the Price is Right, Let's Make a Deal, or Family Feud. But Japanese game shows have more ribald premise than your average reality show. They're also notorious for requiring humiliation and torture. The first Japanese game show to achieve widespread popularity was Takeshi's Castle. This show remains to be considered the origin of the game show genre, and it quickly became a world phenomenon, with models being produced in countries all over the place the world. In this show, contestants would try to "take out" Count Takeshi by finishing a chain of challenges. In many of the challenges, the losing contestants fell into a pit of mud or water. Another game show that has gained popularity is Candy or Not Candy, which demanding situations contestants to bite into something they think is candy. To win, a contestant must guess the correct answer, but if they're wrong, they lose a score.
