Shunga were not only widespread in Edo, but they were often given as gifts to upper-class families, as souvenirs. In addition, writer-booksellers were inspired to make shunga and facilitated its distribution through country-wide cataloques. The stream of shunga resumed in the mid-eighteenth century, and continued for the rest of the Edo period. The commonest forms of shunga are images of ordinary people having sex. Some shunga also characteristic courtesans. The most common shunga images are heterosexual. Occasionally, a pair would engage in masturbation. These images have a very real-world high-quality, that's why some shunga scenes are so established. Porn in Japan has a long heritage. The first pornographic manga dates back to the Edo era. This era's shunga paved the way for modern erotic media in the nation.
