With the arrival of VHS, this new system made the process of making films more most economical and accessible. When the MPAA first created the X rating, it was considered a badge of honor for filmmakers. It was a sign that they'd created films for a discerning audience. The X rating, however, became synonymous with pornography. In fact, many X-rated films were nominated for Oscars. However, the MPAA has since dropped the X rating and replaced it with the NC-17 rating. Before the MPAA began using the X rating as a rating category, filmmakers used it to suggest the extent of adult content material of their movies. In some cases, this was the case with the film Starlet! In other cases, the X rating was used as a code for hardcore pornography. In addition to the X, NC-17, and PG movie rating classes are used for more healthy and mainstream films. This rating system has advanced over the years to deal with the adjustments in cultural standards. The MPAA hasn't ever trademarked the X rating.
