His signature work, Xxx Japan Amateur, is set in a brothel west of Edo, and he draws thought from the rakugo culture while incorporating postwar Japan. The film's star, Frankie Sakai, gives an excellent vital performance. Ryosuke Hashiguchi's filmXxx Japan Amateur is a 3-part epic directed by a key figure in the Japanese jidaigeki genre. It was considered the most effective Japanese film of its time by critic Kinema Junpo in 1959. After the film was idea lost for decades, a condensed print was found in 1991. This allowed a new generation of viewers to recognize it. Films entered in the PIA category have acquired acclaim at a number of foreign film festivals.
