It was the most restrictive rating on the MPAA scale, and anyone under the age of 17 was not allowed to see the film. However, as the decades glided by, the X rating became increasingly inappropriate. In the past, an X-rated movie can be a source of guffaws among schoolchildren, but today, Hollywood has enforced strict self-law for movies. The Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association of America was formed in 1922 by Hollywood studios to enforce the guidelines. This affiliation later changed its name to the Motion Picture Association of America and later to the MPAA. It was under the presidency of Jack Valenti that the modern ratings system was created. In 1990, the MPAA changed the X rating to NC-17, which stands for "No Children Under 17". Although it has trademarked this rating, it hasn't encouraged many filmmakers to use it. There are only a small number of films released with an NC-17 rating, and most of them usually are not shown in mainstream theaters. Another designation for mainstream movies which are mature is the X rating. Movies with an X rating are supposed for adults only, and may comprise violent or sexual content this is considered demanding to little ones.
