The term Shemale is a derogatory term used to describe transsexuals. It was coined by feminist activist Janice Raymond in 1969. Raymond portrayed transgender women as sexual invaders and aggressive sex harassers. Some critics say that this term has over-exaggerated the transgender identification and is utilized in a derogatory way. This derogatory term is not intended to be offensive, however the shemale term is offensive as it implies that a transgender person is a sex perpetrator. However, the term should never be used to consult with a transgender man who has breasts or a high pitched voice. The transgender community was keen to appear in the sexual imaginary. However, they were terrified of the repercussions of self-sexualization, including setbacks of their political struggles for clinical access and social tolerance. The response to this fear, which Green describes as a "Look-No-Don't" reflex, was the key challenge in early trans activism.
