In a global that was still reeling from the death of cinema’s golden age, X-rated movies were an incredibly potent cultural signifier. Not only did they deliver a window into a time when moviemakers got a once-in-a-lifetime freedom to discover the sex, violence, and race of an more and more assorted society, but they also offered an outlet for filmmakers who were in a position to take their art heavily without having to fret about local censorship boards that have been slicing their photos all the way down to ribbons because the art’s creation. X rankings were not trademarked by the MPAA, so they were easily applied by anyone. This made it easy for producers of pornographic films to use the X to their films. As the 1970s wore on and further and further pornographic films were produced, the X rating became much more commonplace. In order to provide their films a more adult-orientated feel, some pornographers started using distinctive Xs to point out that the film contained more picture sexual content than the simple X. This led to the creation of XX and XXX rankings, which pretty much meant that the film had even more picture sexual content than the normal X rating. These were advertised as “hardcore” or “sexy” and were a advertising and marketing tool for pornographers to get more consciousness from their audience. In 1990, the MPAA and the National Association of Theater Owners ceased using the X rating. Instead, they created a new classification called NC-17 which was especially designed for films that contain extreme violence or express sexuality. While this was a favorable development for the industry, it failed to steer clear of pornographers from applying their own X ratings to their films.
