Since the crackdown began, dozens of CDP activists were detained. Some were accused of subversion and sentenced to lengthy prison terms in secret trials, violating the proper to due technique. Others were detained for long durations of time with out trial. The Chinese executive has also targeted the CDP in recent months, with greater than 15 activists being arrested in Hangzhou during a single week. Chinese professionals began to crack down on Falun Gong in July 1997 and banned the Falun Gong religious move. In July, tens of thousands of adherents were held in stadiums across China. Most of them signed statements of recantation, but arrests of Falun Gong adherents endured during the year. The executive also arrested the landlord of a Falun Gong website. Before 1997, a woman may be arrested for having a sexual dating with multiple man. However, most courts accept that lack of consent is a defense.
