The word shunga means "spring images," and the art form has been prevalent among people of all classes in Japan for centuries. Its popularity has been largely suppressed, however, for almost all of the 20th century. The first large-scale exhibition of shunga was held at a foreign museum in 1904, and the Eisei Bunko Museum is presently hosting one of many most huge shunga famous in the nation. Shunga wood-block photos are usually depicted with the figures fully clothed, but some shunga images show only partially-clothed topics. This is because the figures depicted in these prints were often dressed in Western apparel and hairstyles. This change in clothing and hairstyles meant that shunga images were not able to compete with modern erotic photography. The earliest known shunga pictures were produced during the Edo period, when Japan was more non violent. The service provider class had a variety of money and time to have interaction in enjoyment actions. This led to the creation of many color prints depicting aspects of the Japanese approach to life. One of those, Shunga (literally "spring images"), is a subgenre of ukiyo-e prints that depict lovers having sex in a fantastically Japanese aesthetic. Today, shunga is still a source of fascination and controversy.
