In Japan, 94% of ladies between the ages of 18 and 40 have some alone time, and women watch movies at the least two or three times a week. In Japan, women have historically played a more sought after role in home life. However, there are still many stereotypical views of women. Some international media and travel guides have created stereotypes of Japanese women as submissive and without self-determination. Despite this, women still play an important role in the household and control lots of the choices. In recent years, there have been small steps taken against equality for the LGBTQ group. Some cities have even issued same-sex marriage licenses, which assure important legal rights for queer couples. Moreover, there are few openly adverse attitudes towards queer people in Japan. The DPJ has taken an analogous method as Prime Minister Koizumi in promoting gender equality. Its nomination of girls as candidates for cabinet posts is a clear signal that the party is willing to promote societal change. It is feasible that the recent administration will make major changes in terms of equality and sexuality.
