Japan's history with erotic images stretches back to the Edo era. The era of woodblock printing was a key time for the emergence of shunga, or erotic sex. Until currently, shunga was prohibited in the country, but recent lifting of the bans has opened the floodgates, re-igniting the debate among art and obscenity. Anime shunga sparked controversy when it was first released. Publishers of shunga were fined hefty fines. However, Japanese public opinion slowly modified and pornography became a taboo. However, the acclaim for shunga grew. The term shunga refers to any erotic image made by a Japanese artist. These images can be woodblock prints or ink artwork. Many of the shunga depict heterosexual and same sex couples. Others feature voyeuristic ghosts, priests, and enthusiastic octopuses.
