Ticket sales were dwindling, studios were suffering to make ends meet, and lots of studios were forced to file for chapter. This law is in response to the present interpretation of Article 175 of the Criminal Code of Japan, which bans the distribution of "indecent" materials. The laws also restrict the general public screening of "child pornography" or adult video animations. In 1990, the X-rated class was changed by the NC-17 rating. However, some filmmakers still distribute their films with no rating, and X-rated films aren't always masterpieces. Many of these films weren't meant for toddlers and were meant to communicate parental concerns. Number of X-rated movies in JapanPornography is common in Japan, and the country has twice as many X-rated movies as the US.
