The film follows Pearl and her relationship with Maxine. Pearl's obsession with Maxine comes from the area of pornography. While the movie is an unorthodox slasher, the film still manages to awaken some slasher-style logic. While killing promiscuous people is traditionally a slasher staple, the film recognizes Pearl's empathetic nature. The movie pays homage to '70s slashers, but it isn't a parody of them. Director Shane West sought to subvert audiences' expectations with the film. The film's lead actress Brittany Snow channels the air of mystery of Dolly Parton, and she or he is remarkable as a sexually suggestive psychopath. Aside from the slasher features, the movie also tackles the theme of sex as death. A French euphemism, "orgasm," means "little death. " The film interrogates the hypocrisy of American culture in condemning sex as sin and celebrating violence as a God-given right. It also makes observations about the similarity between porn and slasher movies, and makes self-aware jokes about avant-garde editing ideas.
