Chinese tradition influences attitudes toward pornographyChinese people have traditionally been more conservative in their sexual expectations than Westerners. While the Asian context emphasizes the cost of sexual excitement, non-marital or recreational actions are often shamed. Further, Chinese people place a high value on family honor and avoid open dialogue of sex. As a result, a significant proportion of young men in China remain virgins into maturity. For this reason, they may look to pornography for sexual satisfaction. Although the Chinese government has long prohibited the production of pornography for profit, attitudes toward pornography are evolving. As people learn more concerning the human body and the alternative ways it expresses itself, Chinese people are getting more sophisticated of their views of sex. This reflects standard trends in cultural development. In time, attitudes toward pornography and sex turns into more liberal and tolerant. Although censorship of obscene books in China has existed for centuries, they began to change in the course of the May Fourth era and as a part of the Chinese intellectual quest for modernity. Similarly, the debate over the that means of the Chinese character yin offers an interesting viewpoint on the dating among science and morality in Republican China.
