The X rating for pornography was a response to a petition that was began by a set of administrators and manufacturers. It was signed by over forty contributors of the film industry. The group then sent the petition to MPAA chairman Michael Valenti. While the letter was well-meaning, it didn't convince Valenti to change his rating system. He went on to hold summit conferences with different studios, but he still stands by his resolution. This rebranding effort did not remove the ick factor, however. Despite this, hard-core porn films still have the capacity to use the X rating. However, the MPAA still does not allow films with the X rating to be copyrighted.
