Despite the commercial achievement of such myths, the Japanese woman is still a fetish symbol in Western fiction. The origins of this Western view are not absolutely clear. The rise of contemporary nation-states and imperialism in the west were accompanied by the spread of western ideas about women's status. Charles Fourier (1772-1837) and other western thinkers drew upon the philosophies of these international locations to justify the cure of girls as under human. Western and Chinese cultures are extremely alternative, and this polarity manifests in the attitudes of men and girls. Western culture promotes individualism, while Confucian collectivism puts women in a passive role in society.
