The book is a fascinating investigate the history of porn, but it lacks depth and a cohesive narrative. Ford bounces from performer profile to timeline development, and this makes the book difficult to read. At times it looks like an ethical train wreck, and it's hard to see how any of the key themes can be thoroughly explored. A History of X appeals to insiders of the porn industry, but it isn't a good book for outsiders. Some of the stories are lively but sadly depressing, and the book largely lacks trends. One of the few strengths of the book is its bibliography.
