While anime and manga are a positive step forward in the history of sexuality in Japan, there are still many cultural limitations to conquer. For instance, the concept of sexual orientation didn't exist in postwar Japan, and the Japanese queer neighborhood was not very seen until the influx of American troops. The gay and lesbian communities grew in recognition and Shinjuku Ni-chome in Tokyo became the realm's gay town. In 2006, the media started to center around fujoshi. Female manga-ka began to create works with male-male romance. In addition, amateur female creators began to distribute their self-created works at the Comiket comic trade convention. By the end of the last decade, expert female manga-ka had started developing works that depict male-male romance.
