However, the X rating was not trademarked by the MPAA, so pornographers desired to capitalize on its recognition. Films with an X rating were not marketed in respectable theaters, and major media retailers didn't advertise them. Despite these issues, there were maverick filmmakers who embraced the X rating as a badge of honor. Russ Meyer and others took competencies of its notoriety and persisted to unencumber films with an X rating.
