The approval for cosplay is due partly to the proven fact that Japanese pornography has long valued costume and dress. Since the advent of electronic photography and the explosion of the internet, though, the horny side of cosplay has become much more visible. Anime cosplayers often take expertise of this new found popularity by placing on erotic costumes. They may even go as far as to alter their skin color to simulate the skin color in their chosen personality. They can even wear contact lenses that simulate the eye color of the character, causing their pupils to seem larger. They can even mimic their characters' tattoos and special markings. Cosplay is a Japanese portmanteau of dress and play, and was first coined in 1984 at the World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles. The word was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi, who saw costumed fans at the convention and wrote about them in his Japanese magazine My Anime. Takahashi chose to use the hot word cosplay over the current English word, "masquerade", which interprets as "aristocratic dress.
