In this film, Theresa Russell plays a calculating and methodical serial killer who is continually plotting her next kill. One of the film's many highlights is Russell's extraordinary functionality as the protagonist. The other tremendous aspect of this film is the fact that both the serial killer and the investigator are women. This contrasts with the sloppy, cynical male detective, Alex Barnes. Another example of this is After Dark, My Sweet, which was directed by John Foley and in line with a novel by Jim Thompson. The film follows a washed-up boxer, Jason Patric, as he turns into entangled in a kidnapping plot. In the film, he meets an alcoholic widow, Rachel Ward, and her menacing uncle, played by Bruce Dern. Though the unconventional never specifies the location, the director John Foley chose a beautiful place where bad things can happen. The noir genre was accepted in the 90s as the films were cheap and coffee-risk. It also helped to introduce new actors. Don Cheadle's breakout role in Devil in a Blue Dress was among the finest breakout roles of the last decade.
