While it was debatable and condemned for its express content, it still became a cultural touchstone. While the film is not regarded a revolution, it was a breakthrough for "art" films. The film became a sensation with its mixture of nudity and powerful sexuality, leading to its X-rating. While this inspired the construction of many other films that followed, it didn't exchange "The Godfather. " Its casting of Marlon Brando and a relatively unknown Maria Schneider fearful off imitators and became the last X-rated movie to tackle sexuality. The film is a mix of personal, political, and non secular themes. The film follows the lives of a middle-aged man who tries to escape bourgeois society. His young wife struggles together with her sexual urges and family ties. She makes little progress in her life and ends up drowsing with a man with the same name as her old flame. Although these themes could appear beside the point to the genre, they're applicable to the film. The film was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, a man who was 31 years old at the time.
