In Japan, most contemporary art museums are publicly owned, and the MAM has been the subject of protests. However, despite its arguable position in the sector, the museum is privately owned and backed by the efficient Mori family, that's a pillar of the Japanese culture. There are many purposes why artists may self-censor their work. Some are symbolic, designed to promote social cohesion and avoid insults to shared values. Others are in keeping with the interests of effective people. For instance, censorship that limits free speech erodes public trust, and it also prevents people from making knowledgeable decisions during elections. Another problem with self-censorship is that it is used to attack the 'other' side of a discussion.
