The X rating was first utilized in 1951 and was created by British film producers. The X symbol in the rating was a symbolic choice, perhaps because it denotes a cross. In addition, the MPAA did not give protection to X-rated films under copyright laws, so the filmmakers were in a position to add much more Xs to their films.
