As a result, pandas are now constrained to mountain habitats. Because pandas evolved to be solitary creatures, zoos have kept them separated in separate pens. This prevents them from combating, but also means that male pandas are not great at fathering toddlers. As a result, the zoos must use artificial insemination to augment the probabilities of successful breeding. Pandas are probably the most endangered species in the world, with only about 2500 giant pandas remaining in the wild. Most of those pandas are kept in zoos for tourism purposes and conservation. But the zoos do not have much success with breeding efforts. Because of their low belief rates and disinterest in raising cubs, pandas have a notoriously poor record of reproducing. As a result, only thirty percent of a female panda's cubs survives to adulthood. Although there are presently 1,800 wild pandas, only 548 are in captivity.
