However, they are in large part unknown in the West. Many anime authors and artists began out doing doujinshi before being published as manga. The controversy surrounding the acclaim for doujin manga has led to a couple countries cracking down on the book and distribution of such works. One convention that aspects sexually specific doujinshi was shut down in Japan after the police confiscated thousands of doujin manga. Another conference, Comiket, had to shut its doors after police noticed dozens of fanworks featuring underage characters. As a result, many doujin manga fans are susceptible to facing prosecution for their fanworks. The resolution has also drawn complaint from fans. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a set dedicated to free speech, says the hot law misrepresents manga as pornographic. The group points out that the law only applies to "real" child pornography, and does not cover "fictional" depictions of underage characters in sexual situations.
